Augmented Reality is happening right here in Philadelphia!
In early 2010, the Philadelphia Department of Records received an NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up grant to support the development of historic overlays on smart phones. Utilizing augmented reality and smart phone technology, the Department of Records hopes to research and create a prototype that will enable the public to view overlays of historic photographs on top of the current landscape using their smart phones. The project will utilize the extensive photographs available on PhillyHistory.org, the online database of over 84,000 historic images and maps of Philadelphia.
Tonight we will explore the current plans for the project as well as discuss various facets of augmented reality and smart phone technology.
